Kanoo building market share The firm is looking at signing new agency deals with manufacturers as demand for material-handling equipment burgeons across several sectors W ith more than four decades as one of the region’s leading materials handling solutions and specialist equipment providers, Kanoo Machinery is spearheading growth across Saudi Arabia and the GCC to meet increasing demand. Saudi-based Bob Jennings, general manager for Kanoo Machinery for the GCC region, is confident that by 2016 the overall business for Kanoo Machinery in the kingdom will have grown four-fold such is demand from the construction, materials handling, industrial, mining, railways, ports and warehousing sectors. With a vast array of products and services, spare parts availability and technical support, Jennings is focusing on managing his specialist resources across the region by bringing in economies of scale and increasing manpower to meet growing demand and build market share. Jennings has been responsible for developing one of the fastest growing markets in the world with business in Saudi Arabia doubling from 2011 to 2012. The UAE and other markets are coming back after the downturn of 2008/9 with Saudi Arabia enjoying the largest upturn. “Currently, of the total business in the GCC region about 60 per cent is from Saudi Arabia despite a slight slowdown in the first half of 2013. The UAE is about 30 per cent of the total and currently Bahrain and Qatar have less than 10 per cent. Qatar is increasingly important and we can see significant business coming from the major projects now being planned in the years ahead. Abu Dhabi and Sharjah are also encouraging markets from infrastructure to ports handling, industry and warehousing. Impacting on our ability to meet demand particularly in Saudi Arabia is access to technical and engineering-based manpower as well as drivers and operators,” says Jennings. Kanoo Machinery has built its business providing a diverse range of equipment and consumables drawn from the world’s leading manufacturers of materials handling, cranes, vehicles and industrial and maintenance products. Through these agreements and partnerships, the machinery portfolio includes Grove, Hitachi, Ausa, Perkins, Hiab, JLG, Hyster, Bobcat and Shantui. Kanoo Machinery is backed by formidable after sales, workshops, parts and mobile service facilities throughout the GCC region. The product range includes mobile cranes, forklift trucks, warehousing equipment, welding machines, repair and maintenance products, parts and after sales service, rental and leasing of lifting and other equipment. Importantly, not all manufacturers’ agreements for Kanoo Machinery are common for all GCC states. Agreement with Shantui In Saudi Arabia where the procurement cycle includes extraction and mining industries, infrastructure, petrochemical plants, pipelines and large construction projects, Kanoo Machinery is proactively looking at new agreements, agencies and partnerships to meet requirements. Recently, Kanoo Machinery secured an agreement with Shantui, one of the leading Chinese manufacturers and third largest in the world for heavy construction machinery, for its bulldozers and readymix trucks. This new agreement with Shantui best reflects the Kanoo Machinery long-term relationship approach to all agency agreements. “This is the value proposition we offer in terms of adding value to the cost of ownership for service, maintenance, reliability and the profitability of any piece of machinery in the field during its life-cycle. Importantly, in the case of the Shantui readymix trucks we are monitoring on site operations for 12 mixers and pumps to ensure the machines are optimally maintained and operated correctly. This involves the use of remote diagnostics to check temperature and oil levels to maximise utilisation,” says Jennings. “Importantly, driver speeds and road safety is vital for heavy readymix trucks when factoring in the forward momentum of the vehicles and Kanoo Machinery is involved in ensuring that operational best practices are met by drivers and maintenance as part of our remit.” Kanoo Machinery recently supplied Hyster container handling trucks to Riyadh Dry Port. Jennings further added that 2012 had been a great year for Grove Cranes in the GCC area and he expected good results for 2013. According to Jennings, whatever the sector, Kanoo Machinery is actively looking to supply in all market sectors including mining, extraction and railway infrastructure. Well-equipped for the future “By the end of 2013, we will have agreements in place that involve training, maintenance and service capabilities with various equipment supplies to complement our current portfolio specifically focusing on extraction industries, mining and railways. This includes a partnership with Terex-Finlay for mobile crushing, screening and recycling equipment. This equipment can be used when literally moving mountains and massive excavations and we are looking at a portfolio of equipment for large-scale excavation work including Hitachi articulated dump trucks and Bell Equipment from South Africa,” he continues. Bell supplies trucks, haulers, loaders, tractors, backhoes and customised equipment, perfect for large-scale requirements in Saudi Arabia and the GCC region. Kanoo Machinery now has more than 550 staff across the region managed in a cluster of facilities including Kanoo Machinery, Kanoo Spare Parts, Kanoo Oil and Gas and other facilities close to the first industrial city in Dammam. In Saudi Arabia, Kanoo Machinery has facilities in Riyadh, Jeddah, Yanbu and Jubail. In Jeddah, the company has recently opening a workshop, spare parts and warehousing facility covering 35,000 sq m. In Jebel Ali, the company has established a ‘centre of excellence’ facility to manage its field services, technical services, spare parts, remote monitoring, critical alerts and diagnostics to inform customers around the clock. “We carry about 160 separate pieces of equipment and although it is good to sell, it is equally vital to fully support our customers and provide a consolidated self-sufficient solution. We have invested and established across the region a critical mass of consultancy, technical capabilities and core competencies to achieve benchmarked services to customers. Our policy is to be both predictive in operational maintenance and should a problem happen that we are able to diagnose and fix the problem in the shortest possible time,” Jennings says. Jennings paid tribute to his Saudi employees who now constitute 46 per cent of his total staffing in the kingdom as he looks to increase his Saudi workforce through further active engagement with the technical colleges across the kingdom to meet manpower demands. “To manage our predicted expansion with the anticipated four-fold growth, we must meet the manpower challenge, remain competitive and, increasingly, we are looking to employ Saudis fully trained in the technical competencies. It is important to have Saudis engaged in our business to deliver to our customers,” he emphasised. British-born Jennings is a mechanical engineer by profession having started his career in the coalfields of Derbyshire at Killimarsh in the early 1980s. After the pit closures in the UK, he went to South Africa working for four years at Palabora, a cluster of open cast and underground mines in the north-east Transvaal, then the world’s largest copper mine. Later, he worked in robotics, and the design of production lines and power generation before working in Dubai with Emerson. Jennings bought the first successfully operating Tower Crane Anti Collision Systems to the region that greatly improved the operational safety and efficiency of tower cranes in the UAE.

Production of forklift model ends after more than 25 years

Last year, after more than 25 years in production, Hyster manufactured the last in a long line of XL 24v three wheel electric trucks. The A1.00-1.50XL was a unique truck in the history of Hyster because every aspect of design, development, and testing was carried out in Scotland, at the Irvine Plant, nearly 5,000 miles away from their global development centre in Portland, USA. It was hardly surprising that the core team of 12 engineers, many recruited from outside the industry were nicknamed the A Team after the US TV series popular in the early 80s. They were recruited for the specific purpose of designing a new 3 wheel electric truck - they were given two years to get the job done and they brought the project in on time. This was an outstanding achievement, since back then CAD and FEA techniques were only imagined by engineers - in those days it was back to the drawing boards. Bobby Dickson, who was invited to join the A Team back in 1984, speaks with justifiable pride that their original design stood the test of time so well, "we never thought our two year project would still be in production after 25 years, despite many upgrades, our original design was built to last." The A1.00-1.50XL forklift truck was a compact rear wheel drive design, allowing free rotation of the front wheels to achieve 'zero turn radius'. It was the original 'simple, but effective' concept and because it worked so well, it delivered very low operating costs. Unfortunately all good things must end and after more than 16,000 trucks were produced, the last A Truck was shipped from Craigavon to Luxembourg in December last year. One of the biggest challenges facing Hyster was how to make a better A Truck, but last year the original design was replaced by the next generation series of A1.3-1.5XNT, 24-Volt compact, rear wheel drive truck. The new truck provides the economy, performance, battery shift life and manoeuvrability, ideal for light to medium duty applications. It has AC motors throughout (hoist/steer and traction), delivers a competitive top speed of 12 km/h and lifting speed of 0.3 m/s. A choice of eLo and HiP performance settings delivers the 'e-Balance' of performance and energy consumption. The all new A1.3-1.5XNT is now built at the 35,896 m2 (386,241 sq ft) Craigavon factory which opened in April 1981 and now employs over 600 people. The NACCO Materials Handling Group (NMHG) factory has seen significant investments in the last couple of years and maintains a philosophy of high volume, low cost, high quality and on time delivery. In January 2012, The European Foundation of Quality Management awarded the NMHG plant, the prestigious Northern Ireland Quality Award 2011. Since Bobby Dickson is the last man standing from the original A Team, maybe he should have the last word about the new A1.3-1.5XNT design. He grudgingly admits that while 'customer needs have not changed very much since the AXL was launched in 1985, new manufacturing and systems technologies have advanced so far and so fast in recent years, that change was inevitable.' Mr. Dickson said "I'm pleased to have been associated with a design original that was able to stand the test of time and epitomises the strength of UK forklift manufacturing expertise".

South African cement manufacturing plant, PPC Cement has improved operational efficiency and enhanced customer satisfaction levels, by using tough Hyster forklift trucks with specialist double pallet handling attachments. PPC Cement manufacturing plant in Dwaalboom, Limpopo Province, South Africa, loads an average of 2,600 bags or 130,000 kg of palletised dry cement per hour for customers throughout South Africa and in neighbouring countries. The operation is high-pressure, with a required truck loading turnaround time of just 30 minutes. In order to keep up with the time sensitive and demanding operation, tough and dependable Hyster Fortens diesel forklifts were specified to operate three eight-hour shifts per day during the week and one shift per day over weekends. The Hyster Fortens 3.5 FT and 7.0 FT are designed to be highly productive even in harsh and demanding operating environments. The 7 tonne lift capacity machines are able to handle two 2-tonne pallets at a time, reducing the time required to load a 40-ton truck to approximately ten minutes and are also used to load trains transporting cement further afield. The reliable Hyster equipment is ideal for the time sensitive operation providing maximum productivity and minimum downtime. It is supported by a fleet management system and provided on a full service maintenance contract, including an on-site technician. Due to the site's remote location, standby machines have also been provided and forklift availability has increased to 99%. The fleet management system fitted to the Hyster fleet has helped to reduce turnaround time in the warehouse, raising customer satisfaction levels and has heightened the level of driver accountability, which also helps the drivers to be more efficient. PPC Cement is one of the most modern and technologically advanced cement manufacturing plants in southern Africa, serving customers in South Africa and neighbouring countries.
7 tonne “Spacesaver” Hyster forklift for tough UK operation

A 7 tonne "Spacesaver" Hyster forklift truck, reported to be the narrowest and shortest of its type, has been delivered to a fertiliser manufacturer in the UK to help increase efficiency in its tough blending and bagging facility. "The Hyster Fortens Spacesaver truck is the only diesel forklift we could find that has a 7 tonne lift capacity and is narrow and short enough for our operation" explains Neil Stallard, Operations Manager for Mole Valley Forage Services Ltd in the UK. "Trucks from other brands with this lift capacity are physically much bigger." The blending and bagging facility in Teignmouth located in the picturesque South Devon port, handles 75,000 tonnes of fertiliser a year. Bulk raw material is delivered by ship, which is stored, blended, packed in 600kg bags and then transferred to quayside warehouses. "The Hyster Spacesaver is used to transport six 600kg bags at a time from the narrow aisles in the warehouse to the waiting lorries for onward distribution to suppliers and farmers" says Neil, explaining that the S7.0FT Hyster forklift truck is fitted with a unique 2.2m attachment similar to a twin carpet boom, weighing 800kg. It is a 'live load' operation where the bags, which are stored three high, are lifted from the top handles and can swing. "Thanks to the Hyster forklift, our highly experienced drivers can pick and load flatbed or curtain sided lorries extremely quickly, loading bags three deep and two wide on each cycle" adds Neil. "This means we only have to access one side of the lorry resulting in just eight lifts to load 48 bags." Peak season runs from February through to May according to the agricultural calendar when the site can load up to 800 tonnes in one twelve hour day with the compact Hyster forklift truck. "Fast turnaround of the specialised and assured transport is essential to keep costs down, so we depend on the reliability of the truck and local support from Barloworld" he says. Steve Fogg, Regional Key Accounts Manager for Barloworld Handling, the Hyster distribution partner in the UK, conducted the site survey at Mole Valley to help ensure the truck was fit for purpose. Steve explains "Hyster Fortens forklift trucks are proven to provide reliability and a low cost of operation in the most arduous applications, such as exposed port operations. However, this is a hostile and dirty environment where corrosive products are handled, so to ensure continued reliability, we also provided extra protection on key components on this space saving truck." The forklift features the innovative DuraMatch transmission with adjustable Auto-Deceleration (ADS) that slows the truck when the accelerator pedal is released, resulting in less brake pedal usage. The power reversal feature also allows even the most aggressive direction changes in this stop, start operation to be smooth without wheel spin, helping to increase the cushion solid tyre life by up to 50%. The truck also features oil immersed brakes helping to ensure continued reliability and control in the dirty environment and the drivers are reported to like the stability with a full load at height, comfort and finger-tip controls. The diesel powered forklift truck is on a full service contract with the Hyster dealer that provides planned maintenance services and fast local engineer response. A Hyster H3.0FT Fortens forklift was also supplied to help transport bags from the bagging area to storage. Mole Valley Forage Services Ltd. is a joint venture company between Mole Valley Farmers Ltd., a farmer controlled co-operative with nine branches in the South West and many smaller stores throughout the UK, and Group Roullier, an international fertiliser manufacturing and distribution business.

New Hyster ‘barge’ handling reachstacker lowers fuel costs

As part of the new range of low emission Hyster Big Trucks, the company has launched a new reachstacker for barge handling operations, which can deliver fuel savings of up to 20%, depending on the application. The new “negative lift” Hyster ReachStacker is designed specifically for barge handling operations where containers are transferred from the quayside onto a barge. The new model can lower containers to 1.90m below ground level (even lower, upon request) and shares many of the same features as the standard Hyster ReachStacker, which provides lower emissions and significant fuel savings. The Hyster RS 46-41LS CH with barge handling features includes 2.10m extension legs that can flip down and are integrally mounted on the container spreader and operated by a switch in the cab. When the legs are opened, the twistlocks at the bottom of the legs are automatically coupled to the spreader’s twistlocks, and are then instantly ready for use. The barge handling model also features Powered Pile Slope (PPS) convenient for ‘barge’ container handling, helping to level the spreader easily when lifting containers from confined spaces. It offers hydraulically powered sideways articulation of +/- 6.0 degrees, and free (non-powered) sideways articulation of +/- 1.5 degrees. The PPS also gives a 0.31m ‘drop’ of the container spreader. In addition, an extended rotator head provides a ‘drop’ of 1.22m. In practice, containers can be handled down to minus 1.90m below ground level to the top side of the containers, or more upon request. This includes a 0.44m theoretical clearance. This negative lift capability does however affect stacking heights, but it is still possible to stack 5 x 8’6” in the first row and 4 x 8’6” in the second row with the extension legs in the up position. Another important feature of the LS model is a stabiliser mostly inside the front wheelbase which only protrudes 100mm, helping Hyster to maintain the side stability and increase capacity in the third row by seven tonnes. Computer software calculates how best to spread the load. This allows the truck to handle the same capacity whilst taking five tonnes off the counterweight. This is a perfect example of the Hyster philosophy of providing customers with the lowest total cost of ownership as this feature also helps to reduce tyre wear and improve fuel savings even more. The Hyster “Barge” container handler shares many of the same features as the standard Hyster ReachStacker which has long been regarded as one of the most reliable and robust container handlers in the world. It meets the requirements of Tier 4 interim(i), Stage IIIB emissions regulations. Low emissions are achieved using the new Cummins QSL9 (up to 370 hp, 276kW) diesel engine. Combining cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR*) with an improved High Pressure Common Rail (HPCR) fuel system enables cleaner and more efficient combustion, and effectively controls NOx emissions. The fully integrated Cummins Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) also reduces particulate emissions by over 90%. In addition to the Cummins engine technologies, Hyster has also introduced new performance optimisation developments, such as cooling on demand, load sensing hydraulics, RPM management and alternate engine idle speed, to help further reduce the total fuel consumption in all applications. Hyster has achieved fuel savings of up to 20% with EGR engine technology, which means that the end user does not have to change the way it operates. Diesel fuel is added to the tank in exactly the same way and the engine does the rest with no additional equipment, additives or maintenance regimes, unlike SCR technology. Operators can also select either an ECO-eLo “fuel efficiency” or HiP “high performance” mode. The HiP mode is the normal operating mode, whereas the ECO-eLo mode reduces the maximum engine speed and optimises fuel efficiency. The new Cummins engines deliver rapid boost at low engine rpm and then maintain high boost at higher rpm independent of engine speed, thanks to the Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT™) which varies the exhaust gas flow into the turbine wheel. The machines have been designed to achieve maximum space utilisation on container terminals thanks to outstanding manoeuvrability and superior handling speeds. The series is available with oil-immersed brakes, robust drive-axle and powertrain protection against potentially damaging operational procedures or faults, helping to maintain maximum productivity and dependability in the most demanding applications. Hyster ReachStackers include the Powered Sliding Cab for optimum visibility and the container weight display (also showing distance and height), to allow the driver to anticipate the truck’s capabilities before the weight limit is reached. A speed limiter also decelerates the truck if it is driving with a container with the legs down. The Hyster ‘Vista’ cab offers outstanding ergonomics and total driver comfort, with air conditioning options integrated into the ventilation system, low noise and vibration levels, and a choice of conveniently placed controls located to the right of the driver, to ensure maximum front-low level visibility. Large windows, fitted with tinted safety glass ensure the driver has clear, all around visibility, particularly overhead. This is further enhanced in poor weather conditions by a fresh air inlet, an effective heater and defroster and wipers and washers on front, top and rear screens. Details such as sunshade screens are fitted on the top and rear windows and well positioned mirrors assist with the driver’s daily duties. Responsive, fully hydraulic brakes and an automotive style pedal layout further contribute to driver comfort, with autoshift transmissions offering power and control to the driver with smooth gear changes. Hyster products are distributed and supported through an extensive network of authorised, exclusive dealers, providing extensive local coverage through their sales and service locations across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), the Americas and Asia-Pacific.

Rotterdam terminal reduces fuel costs with Hyster ReachStacker

Barge Center Waalhaven, a container terminal in Rotterdam, received such significant fuel cost reductions by introducing a new Hyster ReachStacker, that the Waalhaven Group has placed another order for a new Hyster ReachStacker and an empty container handler in Born. "During a Hyster factory tour in Nijmegen (The Netherlands), the benefits of the new Tier 4i engines used in the new Hyster ReachStackers were clear" explains Mr. De Witte, Terminal Manager at Barge Center Waalhaven in Rotterdam. In October 2011, a new Hyster RS 45-31CH ReachStacker was delivered to the container terminal in Rotterdam and is used to load and unload containers from trucks, stack and handle containers ready for loading the ships. The new Tier 4i / Stage IIIB compliant Hyster ReachStackers deliver similar performance levels as the previous models, but with much lower fuel consumption, saving significant costs on an annual basis. The measured savings by Waalhaven were 4 litres per hour less than other reachstackers running in the same application. The financial savings can be calculated by taking into account the current fuel prices. Chris van der Werdt, Sales Manager for Hyster Big Trucks, explains “Once delivered, we proved to Waalhaven that our claims of significant and sustained fuel cost reductions are achievable in tough and demanding terminal applications.” Barge Terminal Born, another operation in the Waalhaven Group, subsequently ordered an additional Hyster RS 45-31CH ReachStacker which can lift and put away containers from 45,000kg in the first row, 31,000kg in the second row and 16,000kg in the third. Additionally, they ordered the new 2 over 4 9’6” high Hyster empty container handler which also features similar fuel saving benefits. The new machines will both be used at the Barge and Rail Terminal in Born, in the south of the Netherlands, which provides multimodal transport for continental, deep-sea and short-sea containers. Hyster has achieved low emissions and reduced fuel consumption in these container handlers by integrating the new Cummins QSL9 diesel engine with Hyster technologies. Combining cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) with an improved High Pressure Common Rail (HPCR) fuel system enables cleaner and more efficient combustion, and effectively controls NOx emissions. It also features cooling on demand, load sensing hydraulics, RPM management and alternate engine idle speed, to help further reduce the total fuel consumption in all applications. The comfortable ‘Vista’ cab slides over the entire length of the ReachStacker for optimum visibility when handling containers and there is a container weight display which also shows distance and height. The Hyster ReachStacker is also proven to be the quietest in its class and, according to the company, transcends all the performance levels of the competition. The Hyster empty container handler also features the ‘Vista’ cab, which is rear-mounted to provide optimum visibility for the drivers to support stacking up to 8 high with class leading lifting speeds. The service support response time and excellent maintenance provided by the local Hyster distribution partner, Barloworld Intern Transport, were important factors in the purchase decision together with the performance of the machines. The preference of the drivers also played a major role. Barge Center Waalhaven in Rotterdam is one of the three terminals of the Waalhaven Group and is used for handling 'short-sea' and barge containers. Strategically located between the city and the Delta, it has a capacity of 200,000TEUs and is a cost efficient terminal for handling large numbers of containers. Container ships with a maximum capacity of 1,200 TEUs and a depth of 9.5 meters can moor here. The terminal is part of the "Intermodal Transportation Concept" and therefore can offer services that other terminals often can’t.
